The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has raised alarms over a series of attacks on trains along the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor. These incidents threaten passenger safety and disrupt national transportation.

Recently, stones were thrown at a moving train, damaging the windscreen of the leading locomotive. This incident is part of a troubling trend; similar attacks have occurred in more than six locations along the corridor in recent weeks.

The NRC condemned these actions, stating they pose serious risks to passengers, staff, and critical infrastructure. Callistus Unyimadu, an NRC official, expressed deep concern about the frequency of these attacks.

Key facts:

The Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor spans 177 kilometres.

Attacks have been recorded at six different locations recently.

These repeated acts amount to economic sabotage capable of disrupting national transportation.

The NRC is actively working with security operatives and community leaders to strengthen surveillance. They urge residents to report suspicious activities and discourage criminal behavior. Persistent attacks could severely disrupt service delivery if not urgently addressed.

The NRC remains committed to ensuring safe and efficient train operations across the country. However, officials have not confirmed a timeline for when security measures will be fully implemented.

The Saint James Vicariate for Hebrew-speaking Catholics in Israel is celebrating its 70th anniversary. The jubilee took place on May 2 at the Notre Dame Center in Jerusalem, with around 350 parishioners and guests in attendance.

Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa presided over the Mass for the feast of St. James the Apostle. The Vicariate serves Catholics living within Israel’s Hebrew-speaking society, including local Christians and migrants.

Archbishop Atallah Hanna raised alarms about escalating Israeli attacks targeting Christians in Jerusalem. He described these incidents as part of a broader policy aimed at weakening the Palestinian presence in the city.

Hanna highlighted a recent assault on a French nun in Jerusalem’s Old City as indicative of a longer pattern of violations against Christians. “We are one people, and we are all targeted in our holy sites, our endowments and the details of our lives,” he said.

Key facts:

The Vicariate has been active since its founding across Jerusalem, Tel Aviv–Jaffa, Haifa, Be’er Sheva, and Tiberias.

Cardinal Pizzaballa served as vicar from 2005 to 2008.

Fr. Piotr ?elazko remarked, “Seventy years is a gift. It is also a responsibility.”

The Christian Media Center has reported on these developments, emphasizing the need for protection and support for Palestinian Christians facing increasing threats.

Buba Galadima’s recent statements emphasize the need for Atiku Abubakar to join the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to strengthen opposition unity ahead of the 2027 elections. He warned that failure to unite could lead to negative consequences for opposition forces.

Galadima confirmed that the NDC has zoned its presidential ticket to the south. He stated, “We have zoned the party’s presidential candidature to the south. No missing votes. We’ve zoned it to the south.” This zoning decision is part of a broader strategy aimed at consolidating support among key political figures.

Recently, Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso left the ADC and joined the NDC, seeking a more stable platform for their political ambitions. Galadima noted that influential opposition figures are increasingly gravitating toward the NDC.

Galadima expressed concern over Atiku’s reluctance to join, saying, “If he refuses, Atiku will be held responsible for the collapse of the oil post ahead of 2027.” He believes that uniting under one banner is critical for opposing the current government effectively.

The NDC plans to submit its membership register to INEC on May 5 or 6, 2026. Primaries will be a focal point as they prepare for upcoming challenges.

Atiku’s camp has dismissed claims of any planned defection to the NDC. However, observers suggest that his involvement could enhance coalition efforts. Galadima claimed that any reluctance from Atiku could weaken their chances against the ruling party.

The urgency for opposition unity continues as political dynamics evolve leading into the next election cycle. The next steps will involve finalizing membership and preparing for primaries within this newly formed coalition.

The Type 100 main battle tank has entered service with the Chinese army, representing a radical shift in armored warfare. This tank prioritizes detection and networking over traditional heavy armor.

The Type 100 features a fully remote-operated, unmanned turret with an autoloader. Its main armament is a 105 mm smoothbore gun. The estimated weight ranges from 35 to 45 tonnes, and it employs hybrid-electric propulsion generating 1,500 horsepower.

It can reach speeds of about 50 mph (80 km/h) on roads and has an operational range of up to 372 miles (600 km). Each Type 100 tank costs up to US$7.5 million.

The Type 100 is classified as a fourth-generation battle tank by China. It incorporates augmented reality (AR) helmet systems for the crew. Additionally, it features an active protection system equipped with eight interceptors to counter threats.

Brandon J. Weichert noted, “The next major ground war will be decided by whose tanks see, process, and kill first.” He emphasized that the Type 100 is designed for ambush, repositioning, and low-signature maneuver warfare rather than brute-force breakthroughs.

China has crafted for itself in the Type 100 a rolling sensor suite that just happens to have a powerful main gun. The design reflects modern warfare challenges, particularly in the context of drone warfare.

Yet, uncertainties remain regarding the effectiveness of the Type 100’s electronics under electronic warfare attacks. There is also doubt about its active protection system’s performance against swarm attacks.

The Senate of Nigeria has amended its standing orders to restrict leadership eligibility to returning members of the 10th Assembly.

The Senate of Nigeria has implemented strict eligibility criteria for its leadership positions, limiting them to returning members of the 10th National Assembly. The amendments to the Senate Standing Rules affect the nomination process for key roles, including the Senate President.

Only senators who have served two consecutive terms will be eligible to contest for principal offices. At least one term must be the immediate term preceding the nomination. The amended Order 4 states that nomination of Senators to serve as Presiding Officers shall be in accordance with the ranking of Senators.

Key eligibility criteria include:

Former President of the Senate and Deputy President of the Senate

Former Principal Officers of the Senate

Senators who have served at least one term of four years

Former members of the House of Representatives

First-time senators

The new rules further specify that only senators currently serving in the 10th Assembly who secure re-election into the 11th Senate will qualify to vie for leadership positions. The Senate reinforced this restriction through an amendment to Order 5.

This amendment bars fresh entrants from contesting principal officer positions unless they meet additional experience requirements. Any senator must serve at least two consecutive terms immediately preceding nomination.

The reform aims to preserve legislative tradition and improve order within the chamber. It ensures that leadership roles are filled by members with adequate parliamentary experience.

The decision was reached after a closed-door session on Tuesday, where senators adopted guidelines aimed at strengthening hierarchy and institutional stability within the upper chamber.

The ranking structure significantly narrows eligibility for newly elected senators seeking leadership positions in the upcoming 11th Senate. No timeline has been shared regarding when these changes will take full effect.

“I don’t want this Senate to be shedding tears, to sympathise with those who have died. We didn’t come here to share tears,” said Adams Oshiomhole during a recent Senate session. His remarks came as he called for the nationalisation of MTN and DSTV in response to rising xenophobic violence against Nigerians in South Africa.

Oshiomhole urged the Nigerian government to revoke the licenses of South African companies operating within its borders. He linked these calls to the deaths of at least two Nigerians since tensions escalated last month. He emphasized that Nigerians living in South Africa are economically productive and not dependent on the host country.

The former governor argued that nationalising MTN would create opportunities for local firms and send a strong message against economic targeting of Nigerians abroad. He stated, “If you hit me, I’ll hit you. I think it is appropriate in diplomacy. It’s an economic struggle.” This marks a significant shift in Nigeria’s diplomatic relations with South Africa.

Oshiomhole also pointed out broader political dynamics, noting anti-immigrant sentiments prevalent in South Africa. His statements reflect growing pressure on the Federal Government to adopt a stronger stance amid recurring xenophobic violence.

The Senate, however, did not adopt Oshiomhole’s position regarding the motion on these attacks. Meanwhile, the House of Representatives has called for a review of all bilateral agreements with South Africa following the violence.

Victor Umeh, another political figure, added that “The AU, of which South Africa is a member, should raise now and impose necessary sanctions.” The situation continues to evolve as Nigerian citizens seek protection from escalating xenophobia abroad.

Predictions indicate that the 2027 Social Security COLA could be higher than in previous years, driven by inflation and energy prices.

The post 2027 social security cola appeared first on Toprecruitment.

Predictions for the 2027 Social Security COLA suggest it could be significantly higher than previous years due to rising inflation driven by energy prices. The Senior Citizens League projects a 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for Social Security in 2027, while the Congressional Budget Office forecasts a slightly higher 3.1% increase.

Key projections:

The Senior Citizens League predicts a 2.8% COLA for 2027.

The Congressional Budget Office forecasts a 3.1% COLA for the same year.

Mary Johnson predicts a 3.2% COLA based on recent CPI data.

Inflation has surged, especially in March 2026, due to soaring energy prices linked to the ongoing Iran conflict. This spike in inflation affects the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), which is used to calculate the COLA. The official COLA will be announced in October 2026 after third-quarter data is collected.

Impact on benefits:

A 2.8% COLA would mean an extra $58 per month for the average retired worker. and A 3.1% COLA would result in an additional $79 per month for the same demographic.

However, experts warn that high COLAs may not always benefit retirees. A large Social Security COLA isn’t necessarily good news, as it may indicate underlying economic issues. “The prospect of a sizable pay increase probably seems appealing, but high COLAs tend to be bad news in disguise,” said one analyst.

The increase in Medicare Part B premiums also factors into retirement planning. For instance, the premium increased from $185 to $202.90 in 2026, impacting overall benefit calculations.

The final COLA percentage for 2027 remains uncertain and will depend on inflation data collected during the summer of 2026. The formula for determining this year’s adjustment follows established guidelines using CPI-W readings from that period.

The Iron Dome’s deployment in the UAE marks a significant shift in air defense collaboration amid escalating threats from Iran. On May 4, 2026, an Israeli Iron Dome air defense system intercepted an Iranian missile over the UAE, demonstrating its operational capabilities outside Israel and the United States.

The interception occurred during a period of heightened tensions. The UAE has faced approximately 550 ballistic missiles and 2,200 drone strikes from Iran in recent months. This deployment confirms the transition of the bilateral relationship from diplomatic normalization, established by the Abraham Accords, to a functional security alliance.

Key facts:

This is the first operational use of the Iron Dome outside of Israel or the United States during an active war.

The UAE has been targeted with around 560 ballistic and cruise missiles and over 2,250 drones launched by Iran during the conflict.

The deployment was authorized in secret by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The Iron Dome was accompanied by Israeli Defense Forces personnel during its deployment. Military cooperation between Israel and the UAE has deepened significantly since the 2020 Abraham Accords. The decision reportedly followed direct coordination between Netanyahu and UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

This engagement marks a new chapter in regional security dynamics. The effectiveness of this collaboration will likely influence future military strategies and diplomatic relations in the region.

An Israeli Iron Dome air defense system intercepted an Iranian missile over the UAE on May 4, 2026. This event underscores the growing military cooperation between Israel and the UAE since the Abraham Accords.

The interception is notable because it represents the first operational use of the Iron Dome outside of Israel or the United States during an active conflict. The UAE has recently faced approximately 550 ballistic missiles and 2,200 drone strikes launched at its territory, primarily attributed to Iran.

This escalation prompted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to authorize the deployment in secret. Reports indicate that this decision followed direct coordination between Netanyahu and UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Key statistics:

The UAE has encountered around 550 ballistic missiles aimed at its territory.

There have been over 2,200 drone strikes targeting the UAE in recent months.

Iran launched approximately 560 ballistic and cruise missiles during the conflict.

Iran also deployed over 2,250 drones against the UAE.

The Iron Dome was accompanied by Israeli Defense Forces personnel during its deployment, marking a new phase in bilateral relations. The interception confirms a transition from diplomatic normalization to a functional security alliance.

As tensions continue to rise, further developments are expected regarding military cooperation between Israel and the UAE. The situation remains dynamic as both nations navigate their security challenges in a volatile region.
