Buba Galadima’s recent statements emphasize the need for Atiku Abubakar to join the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to strengthen opposition unity ahead of the 2027 elections. He warned that failure to unite could lead to negative consequences for opposition forces.
Galadima confirmed that the NDC has zoned its presidential ticket to the south. He stated, “We have zoned the party’s presidential candidature to the south. No missing votes. We’ve zoned it to the south.” This zoning decision is part of a broader strategy aimed at consolidating support among key political figures.
Recently, Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso left the ADC and joined the NDC, seeking a more stable platform for their political ambitions. Galadima noted that influential opposition figures are increasingly gravitating toward the NDC.
Galadima expressed concern over Atiku’s reluctance to join, saying, “If he refuses, Atiku will be held responsible for the collapse of the oil post ahead of 2027.” He believes that uniting under one banner is critical for opposing the current government effectively.
The NDC plans to submit its membership register to INEC on May 5 or 6, 2026. Primaries will be a focal point as they prepare for upcoming challenges.
Atiku’s camp has dismissed claims of any planned defection to the NDC. However, observers suggest that his involvement could enhance coalition efforts. Galadima claimed that any reluctance from Atiku could weaken their chances against the ruling party.
