President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Rabiu Abdullahi Umar as the new Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA). This decision comes after the removal of Saidu Mohammed, aiming to enhance regulatory effectiveness in Nigeria’s petroleum sector.
The nomination is subject to Senate confirmation. Until then, the most senior official at NMDPRA will oversee operations in an acting capacity. The announcement was made by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
Umar brings over 25 years of experience in the energy, manufacturing, and infrastructure sectors. He holds a degree in Accounting from Bayero University and is an alumnus of Harvard Business School. His appointment aligns with the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act 2021.
The change in leadership follows the exit of Farouk Ahmed, the pioneer Chief Executive, who stepped aside in December 2025. Saidu Mohammed had previously held the position before his recent removal.
Bayo Onanuga stated, “The decision was taken in line with the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act 2021 and is aimed at strengthening regulatory effectiveness in the midstream and downstream petroleum sector, in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.” Observers expect that Umar’s leadership will address ongoing challenges within Nigeria’s energy sector.
