“It is covetousness that will make somebody sell their property in Nigeria and go to do a care job in America. Foolish thinking!” Pastor Dolapo Lawal made this statement while addressing the growing trend among Nigerians to sell their assets for care jobs abroad.
Lawal, the lead pastor of Zoe Household Global, criticized this migration trend during a recent sermon. He highlighted that many individuals are misled by social media portrayals of life abroad. They often believe that relocating guarantees financial stability and success.
He warned that many who migrate face hardships and may end up stranded. “Because you are seeing people in the UK taking pictures, you think they are okay? Now you go there, you are stranded there, and you cannot come back because of shame. Meanwhile, you are coveting that life,” he said.
Lawal questioned the logic behind selling assets in Nigeria for menial jobs overseas. He referred to this movement as “Japa,” a term popularized among youths seeking opportunities abroad.
The pastor emphasized that covetousness leads to poor life choices. He urged his congregation to reconsider their decisions before making such drastic moves. His comments reflect a growing concern within the Nigerian community about the impact of social media on migration decisions.
Lawal concluded by asking, “How many people have gone to the UK and become a billionaire there?” This rhetorical question underscores his skepticism about the perceived benefits of such migrations.
