Kabila has been sanctioned by the US for allegedly supporting the M23 rebels, a group that controls significant territory in eastern Congo. The US accused him of providing financial support to the AFC to influence the political situation in the region.
All of Kabila’s assets in the US have been frozen due to these sanctions. He described them as “unjustified and politically motivated.” Kabila has threatened legal action against the US, claiming their decision was based on unsubstantiated narratives from Kinshasa authorities.
The Congolese government welcomed the sanctions, viewing them as an important step in combating impunity. A military court in Congo sentenced Kabila to death in absentia for treason and war crimes.
Kabila has lived in South Africa since 2023. He expressed interest in returning to Congo to help find a solution to the ongoing crisis. However, the sanctions restrict his capacity for mobilizing financial or logistical support.
The M23 rebel group continues to exert control over key areas, including Goma and Bukavu. The situation remains tense as various factions vie for power amid ongoing conflict.
