Three people have died after a hantavirus outbreak aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship. The outbreak has prompted a World Health Organisation investigation into five additional suspected infections.

The operator of the MV Hondius reported that a Dutch couple and a German national had died. A 69-year-old UK national is in intensive care in South Africa due to hantavirus. The ship was carrying about 150 tourists when the outbreak occurred.

The MV Hondius departed from Argentina three weeks ago for a voyage that included stops in Antarctica and the Falkland Islands. Hantaviruses are primarily found in rodents and can infect humans through contact with infected rodent faeces, urine, and saliva.

According to experts, hantavirus infections are typically linked to environmental exposure. Associate Professor Vinod Balasubramaniam noted that these infections are often associated with contact with rodent reservoirs. Human-to-human transmission of hantavirus is rare, but the disease can cause severe respiratory illness.

Dr Yomani Sarathkumara stated that hantavirus infections were “really rare in humans.” However, public health action is necessary to address this outbreak. Epidemiological investigations are underway to determine the source of the infection.

The causes of the deaths of the other passengers are being investigated. Officials have not confirmed the exact cause of their deaths yet.

The International Atomic Energy Agency has not been able to inspect Iran’s nuclear sites since the outbreak of war in June 2025. This situation raises concerns about the status of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile. Iran has accumulated 11 tons of enriched uranium since it began enriching uranium on an industrial scale in 2006.

Much of this highly enriched uranium is likely still at the Isfahan nuclear complex. The IAEA believes that approximately 200 kilograms of enriched uranium is stored in tunnels at this site. Additionally, Iran possesses 440.9 kilograms of uranium enriched up to 60 percent purity, which has no peaceful application.

On June 9, 2025, a truck carrying 18 blue containers, believed to contain highly enriched uranium, entered the Isfahan Nuclear Technology Center. Rafael Grossi, the IAEA Director General, stated, “We haven’t been able to inspect or to reject that the material is there and that the seals — the IAEA seals — remain there.” He added that the majority of Iran’s enriched uranium is likely at the Isfahan nuclear complex.

IAEA inspections ended when the US-Israeli war began. This conflict has left observers uncertain about the exact location of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile. It is unclear how long it would take Iran to turn its enriched uranium into a nuclear weapon.

Grossi emphasized that what’s important is that this material either leaves Iran or is blended to reduce its enrichment levels. The potential for nuclear proliferation remains a significant concern among international observers.

“Africa is splitting apart faster than we thought, forming a new ocean,” said a researcher involved in the study. New findings reveal that the split between the Nubian Plate and the Somali Plate is progressing rapidly, especially within the East African Rift System.

The rifting process has reached a “critical threshold.” The Turkana Rift Zone plays a crucial role in understanding these geological changes. The Earth’s crust in the center of the rift is only about 13 kilometers thick, while it exceeds 35 kilometers thick along its edges.

This rifting began approximately four million years ago. The current phase is known as necking, which indicates that oceanization will likely follow soon. The Afar Depression has already begun showing signs of ocean formation.

The rifting will take several million years to complete, which is relatively quick in geological terms. This ongoing process provides scientists with a rare opportunity to observe how a new ocean forms.

The Turkana Rift Zone also contains fossils of early hominins. However, researchers suggest that these findings may not be as significant for understanding human evolution as previously believed. The movement of tectonic plates continues to shape our planet’s surface.

The current arrangement of Earth’s continents may seem permanent, but in reality, they are in constant motion. This research highlights the dynamic nature of geological processes affecting Africa today.

A sudden shutdown at Egbin Power Station has triggered fears of prolonged blackouts in Lagos, Nigeria’s largest electricity market. The plant experienced a major operational disturbance on April 28, 2026, leading to a complete loss of generation.

The output of Egbin Power Station dropped from about 641 megawatts to zero at approximately 8:21 p.m. The Nigerian Independent System Operator reported that this loss of generation created a significant supply shortfall. Consequently, immediate load-shedding measures have been implemented to maintain grid stability and prevent wider system disturbances.

The outage was attributed to critical equipment failure, specifically involving the central compressor and circulating water pump system. This technical issue underscores the vulnerability of the facility, which is the largest electricity-generating plant on Nigeria’s national grid.

Key facts:

Egbin Power Station has an installed capacity of over 1,300 megawatts.

The Osogbo–Ikeja West 330kV transmission line is currently out of service.

Emergency measures have been activated to manage the situation and minimize impact on consumers.

Officials have not disclosed a timeline for repairs or when normal operations might resume. The outage has intensified concerns about the reliability of Nigeria’s electricity supply, especially in urban areas like Lagos that heavily depend on it.

Rising global tensions over nuclear weapons, particularly involving Iran, raise significant concerns. The situation remains fluid and uncertain.

The post Nuclear Weapon Concerns Rise Amid Global Tensions appeared first on Toprecruitment.

The threat of nuclear weapons looms larger as global tensions escalate. Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile has reached alarming levels, with approximately 440 kilograms enriched to 60 percent. This puts the country dangerously close to achieving weapons-grade uranium, which requires enrichment to 90 percent.

The nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) has been a cornerstone of global efforts to curb the spread of nuclear arms for over five decades. Yet, for the first time since 1972, there are no binding limits on the size of U.S. and Russian nuclear arsenals. This lack of oversight raises concerns about a potential arms race.

Experts warn that Iran could covertly convert its 60 percent enriched uranium into weapons-grade material within weeks. Ted Postol, a prominent analyst, stated that a single centrifuge cascade—capable of enriching uranium—requires minimal space. In fact, it could fit within the confines of a studio apartment.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) classifies anything below 20 percent enrichment as low-enriched uranium (LEU). Weapons-grade uranium is defined as above 90 percent enrichment. This distinction is critical as Iran continues its nuclear activities under the guise of peaceful purposes, supported by the NPT’s provisions.

Current estimates suggest that it might take four or five weeks for Iran to achieve the necessary enrichment level for weapons-grade uranium. The country’s capabilities have grown significantly; before recent conflicts, it operated 1,740 IR-6 centrifuges designed for enriching uranium.

Compounding these issues is the fact that most nuclear powers are modernizing their arsenals rather than dismantling them. Du Hong Viet cautioned that this trend could undermine the credibility of the NPT itself and its review process.

Moreover, Iran’s potential to produce low-technology atomic bombs from its enriched uranium poses an immediate risk. Analysts estimate that from its current stockpile, Iran could build up to ten such bombs. The implications for regional security are profound.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding future developments in this arena. As nations grapple with these challenges, the international community watches closely for signs of escalation or resolution.

World Quantum Day is an annual event held on April 14, a date that reflects the first three digits of the Planck constant (4.14 × 10⁻¹⁵ eV·s). This day aims to raise public awareness of quantum science and technology, showcasing the advancements and potential applications of quantum research.

Launched in 2021 by an international network of scientists, World Quantum Day has quickly become a platform for educational outreach. The event features a variety of activities, including lectures, lab tours, workshops, and online programming, designed to engage the public and promote understanding of quantum phenomena.

As of 2026, quantum technology is transitioning from theoretical research to early-stage commercial applications. This shift is significant, as quantum computers are capable of solving complex problems that classical computers struggle with, particularly in optimization and simulation.

On this year’s World Quantum Day, experts emphasized the importance of recognizing the current state of quantum technology. Aditya Singh stated, “World Quantum Day is not a celebration of what quantum computing will be — it is a recognition of what it already is.” This highlights the tangible advancements already made in the field.

However, there is still much work to be done. Dan Holme remarked, “On World Quantum Day, now is the time to recognise that more still needs to be done to close the gap between laboratory breakthroughs and real-world quantum deployment.” This sentiment reflects the ongoing challenges faced by researchers and developers in bringing quantum technologies to market.

Investment in quantum technology is also on the rise, with the UK committing £2 billion to its Quantum Leap funding initiative and an additional £180 million towards its National Timing Centre programme. These investments are crucial for fostering innovation and supporting the development of quantum applications.

As organizations increasingly transition to post-quantum cryptography, with an estimated 38% making the shift in 2026, the urgency for advancements in quantum technology becomes even more apparent. Trevor Lanting noted, “The future won’t be defined by a single approach, but by multiple architectures working together,” emphasizing the collaborative nature of future developments.

Jan Goetz concluded with optimism, stating, “The technology is real. The applications are real. The timeline to quantum advantage is compressing.” This perspective underscores the rapid progress being made in the field and the potential for significant breakthroughs in the near future.

World Quantum Day serves not only as a celebration of current achievements but also as a call to action for continued research and development in quantum science and technology. As the event grows, it plays a vital role in shaping public understanding and engagement with this transformative field.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecasted a mix of sunny, cloudy, and thunderstorm conditions across Nigeria on April 13, 2026. The agency anticipates that thunderstorm activity will increase in coverage and intensity later in the day, advising residents to expect wet conditions, lightning, and possible disruptions.

NiMet specifically predicted thunderstorms with moderate rains in several states, including Bauchi, Gombe, and Taraba. This forecast comes as the Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON) issued a national advisory for building maintenance during the 2026 rainy season, highlighting potential risks associated with longer-than-normal rainy seasons and above-normal rainfall.

Farmers in Sokoto have reported significant losses, totaling billions of naira, due to missed or inaccurate meteorological forecasts from NiMet. In 2025, Nigeria’s rice output declined to 5.23 million metric tons, the lowest level recorded in four years, exacerbating the challenges faced by local farmers.

NiMet received ₦9.82 billion for operations in 2025, which included funding for climate information dissemination. However, the agency acknowledged that it does not communicate directly with farmers, instead relying on extension agents to relay information. This has raised concerns among farmers about the effectiveness of the communication channels.

Ibrahim Abubakar, a local farmer, emphasized the need for NiMet to establish direct contact with farmers’ leaders, stating, “NiMet should establish synergy with farmers’ leaders for direct contact.” In response to these concerns, James Adamu, another farmer, mentioned ongoing efforts to design a project that would enable farmers to receive SMS updates based on their location.

As the 2026 rainy season approaches, uncertainties remain regarding its impact on infrastructure and human safety. Details remain unconfirmed about the effectiveness of NiMet’s planned SMS-based dissemination platform for reaching farmers.

The post Psychology: Recent Developments in appeared first on Toprecruitment.

In recent months, the field of psychology has seen significant developments, particularly concerning the understanding of people-pleasing behaviors and innovative training methods for psychology students. Research indicates that higher people-pleasing tendencies are significantly associated with lower levels of mental well-being among university students.

Chronic people-pleasing can lead to burnout, resentment, and a loss of personal identity, as noted by Dr. Susan Albers. She emphasizes that over time, these behaviors can have detrimental effects on mental health.

Dr. Jennifer Kromberg explains that people-pleasing is often a learned behavior stemming from childhood experiences, which can become ingrained over time. This understanding is crucial for both individuals struggling with these tendencies and professionals aiming to address them in therapy.

In a related development, a study conducted by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) research group ‘RISKIT’ explored the benefits of observing experienced therapists. The study involved 108 first-year psychology students divided into two groups for training, with one group shadowing therapists during therapy sessions.

The results showed that students who shadowed therapists demonstrated significant improvement in their ability to interact with patients. This kind of apprenticeship learning appears to be a valuable addition to the training methods typically used in the first academic year of study, according to Steffen André Fagerbakk.

Students observed therapy sessions for ten weeks, which provided them with practical insights that traditional classroom learning may not offer. The findings were published in the journal Psychotherapy Research, highlighting the importance of experiential learning in psychology education.

It takes at least six years of study to qualify as a clinical psychologist, underscoring the commitment required to enter this field. As the landscape of psychology continues to evolve, these insights into both personal behavior and educational practices are vital for future practitioners.

As the field progresses, understanding the implications of people-pleasing behaviors and enhancing training methods for psychology students will remain critical for improving mental health outcomes and professional competencies.

In a notable development for the lithium sector, Chariot has secured six licences for lithium exploration and mining in Nigeria. This acquisition, which includes four exploration licences and two small-scale mining licences, positions Chariot as a key player in the region.

On April 13, 2026, Chariot announced its acquisition of a 66.667 percent stake in C&C Minerals Limited, while Continental Lithium Limited retains a 33.333 percent stake. This partnership is expected to enhance Chariot’s operational capabilities in Nigeria.

Independent analysis has confirmed the presence of high-value spodumene across all six sampled sites, with spodumene accounting for between 28.4 percent and 75.3 percent of crystalline content in the samples. The lithium oxide grades in these samples ranged from 2.66 percent to 5.96 percent, indicating a promising resource.

Additionally, elevated caesium values were recorded, with pollucite reaching up to 9.5 percent in one sample. These findings are crucial as they support Chariot’s plans to advance drill-ready targets and accelerate exploration across its Nigerian portfolio.

Chariot’s entry into the Nigerian lithium sector is significant as it is the first ASX-listed lithium company to do so. This milestone is seen as a key regulatory achievement that materially de-risks its Nigerian lithium portfolio acquisition.

Shanthar Pathmanathan, a representative from Chariot, emphasized the importance of these approvals, stating, “These approvals are monumental for the Company and indeed the global lithium sector as they signify the first entry of an ASX-listed lithium company into the high-potential lithium sector in Nigeria.”

The development is expected to have a substantial impact on the lithium market, particularly as the Nigerian lithium sector hosts pegmatites producing spodumene for the Chinese market.

As Chariot plans to further its exploration efforts, the implications of this discovery could extend beyond the company, potentially influencing global lithium supply chains.

Overall, this sequence of events marks a pivotal moment for Chariot and the broader lithium industry, highlighting Nigeria’s emerging role in the global lithium market.

Underwater archaeologists have made a significant discovery in Lake Neuchâtel, Switzerland, recovering over 1000 Roman objects that are believed to have belonged to a cargo ship that sank between 20 and 50 AD. This find not only highlights the historical significance of the region but also enhances our understanding of Roman trade and military logistics.

The recovery operation was led by archaeologists Fabien Langenegger and Julien Pfyffer, who initially approached the site with caution, suspecting it could be a depot of mines left from the Second World War. However, upon further investigation, they confirmed the presence of ancient artifacts.

Among the recovered items are kitchen utensils and personal belongings of legionaries, including two gladiator swords, a dagger, a belt buckle, and a fibula. Notably, one crate was dated to the year 17 AD, indicating the cargo’s historical importance.

According to Pfyffer, “We have recovered from the water all the artefacts – just over 1000 – that were in danger of being damaged by anchors or nets or stolen by looters.” The team utilized drone footage to initiate the dive that led to this remarkable discovery.

The finds are currently undergoing restoration and analysis, with plans for a documentary film and a book about the discovery set for release in 2027. Additionally, an exhibition showcasing these artifacts will be held at the Laténium museum.

Despite the successful recovery, the wreck of the cargo ship itself has not yet been located. The discovery was kept secret for a considerable time to prevent looting, underscoring the value of the artifacts.

As the restoration process continues, experts anticipate that further insights into the manufacturing techniques and usage of these items will emerge. Pfyffer noted, “The restorers will be able to recognise details (such as manufacturing seals, traces of food, protective elements such as straw between the plates) that are very difficult for us to see in the water.”

This significant recovery of Roman objects not only enriches the archaeological record but also poses questions about the broader implications of Roman presence in the region during that era. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full extent of the ship’s cargo and its historical context.
