“The reform was designed to reduce the cost of governance while enhancing efficiency, accountability, and the overall quality of education administration in the state,” stated Governor Abba Yusuf during a recent press conference.
In a significant restructuring move, Governor Yusuf has dissolved the Ministry of Higher Education in Kano State, merging it into the Ministry of Education. This decision comes as part of broader reforms aimed at improving the education sector in the state.
As part of the restructuring, a new Directorate of Higher Education will be established to oversee tertiary education activities. This change is expected to strengthen coordination and eliminate duplication of responsibilities within the education system.
The governor emphasized that the restructuring is not only about merging departments but also about enhancing the overall quality of education administration. “The administration remained fully committed to implementing far-reaching reforms that would revive the education sector and secure a brighter future for the younger generation,” he added.
In conjunction with these changes, the Scholarship Board will also return to the Ministry of Education, ensuring that state-owned universities are supervised by the new directorate under the merged ministry.

Political tensions have arisen in the wake of this announcement, particularly following the removal of Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo from his position as commissioner. Gwarzo’s removal comes amid impeachment proceedings initiated by the Kano State House of Assembly.
Notably, Governor Yusuf recently defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), while Gwarzo chose not to follow him, further complicating the political landscape.
