West Ham Advances to FA Cup Quarter-Finals
“Confidence comes from winning games; okay, we didn’t win the game on the night, but we won it on penalties, which makes it a little bit more special to enjoy it as a team,” said West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen after a thrilling FA Cup match against Brentford FC.
West Ham United reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup after a penalty shootout victory over Brentford, with the match ending 2–2 after normal time. The tie progressed to extra time and ultimately penalties, where West Ham triumphed 5–3.
Bowen opened the scoring for West Ham in the 19th minute, showcasing his skill and determination. However, Brentford’s Igor Thiago equalized in the 28th minute, setting the stage for a competitive match.
Bowen later converted a penalty to restore West Ham’s lead after a foul on Adama Traore, but Brentford fought back again. Thiago scored a second penalty for Brentford in the 81st minute, forcing the match into extra time.
In a tense penalty shootout, Dango Ouattara attempted a Panenka penalty that was caught by West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, a pivotal moment that shifted the momentum in favor of West Ham.
Konstantinos Mavropanos ultimately converted the decisive spot kick, securing a 5–3 victory in the shootout. This win allows West Ham to host Leeds United in the quarter-finals on April 4.
Keith Andrews, reflecting on Ouattara’s penalty miss, emphasized the courage required to take such a risk, stating, “It takes serious courage to do that. He’s practiced that technique a lot, and if he does it, everyone will praise him. Dango will get the full support he needs from me and everyone associated with him.”
Bowen’s performance and the team’s resilience are crucial as West Ham aims for silverware this season, especially given their struggles in the league.
