The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the results for the 2026 First Series of the Computer-Based WASSCE for private candidates. Before this announcement, expectations were high, with many anticipating a steady performance similar to previous years.
However, the recent results revealed a decisive moment: a total of 10,523 candidates registered for the examination, reflecting an 11.49% increase from 2025. Out of these, 10,480 candidates sat for the examination, which was conducted from January 28 to February 14, 2026.
The results showed that only 30.95% of candidates obtained credit or above in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics. Specifically, 4,598 candidates achieved credits in five subjects, while 3,429 managed to secure credits that included both English and Mathematics.
Furthermore, 8,418 candidates, or 80.32%, had fully processed results, while 2,062 candidates had some subjects still under processing. This indicates a significant improvement in the processing of results compared to previous years.
However, the results were not without issues; 75 candidates had their results withheld due to alleged examination malpractice. WAEC stated that investigations were ongoing, and decisions would be communicated directly to the affected candidates.
Marking of scripts took place at three venues: Lagos, Enugu, and Kaduna, with 608 examiners participating in the coordination and marking exercise. This collaborative effort aimed to ensure accuracy and efficiency in the evaluation process.
In a notable aspect of inclusivity, 43 candidates with special needs registered for the examination, including those who are visually and hearing impaired. Adequate provisions were made for them during the conduct of the examination, as highlighted by Moyosola Adesina, a WAEC representative.
WAEC attributed the swift processing of results to its growing reliance on digital examination systems, which have streamlined operations significantly. The results were officially announced on March 27, 2026, marking a pivotal moment for both candidates and the examination body.
