What does the discontinuation of the Samsung Messages app mean for users? Samsung has announced that it will phase out its messaging application, Samsung Messages, by July 2026, advising users to switch to Google Messages as their default texting app.

This decision comes as newer Samsung phones have already adopted Google Messages as the default texting application since 2022. Samsung Messages has not been a priority for the company for years, and the transition to Google Messages has been in the works for some time.

According to Samsung, users will receive in-app notifications from Samsung Messages to guide them through the transition. While newer devices will be affected, owners of older Samsung phones running Android 11 or older will continue to support Samsung Messages without disruption.

Samsung Messages had previously supported Rich Communication Services (RCS), but it was reliant on carrier-specific standards, which limited its functionality compared to Google Messages. The latter offers improved capabilities, including higher-resolution images and advanced AI features.

<pA survey indicated that 69% of users prefer Samsung Messages over Google Messages, while only 15% already use Google Messages as their default app. Interestingly, 10% of respondents believe it was about time Samsung retired Samsung Messages.

Samsung’s decision to discontinue its messaging app aligns with a broader trend in the industry, where companies are consolidating their messaging services to enhance user experience. As Samsung moves forward, it remains to be seen how users will adapt to this change.

For those still using Samsung Messages, the company asserts that this transition is ultimately for the better, as it aims to provide a more seamless messaging experience through Google Messages.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the specific features users can expect from Google Messages as they make the switch. However, the company is committed to ensuring a smooth transition for all users.

“The iPhone Fold has now begun trial production at Foxconn,” stated Instant Digital, marking a significant milestone in Apple’s long-anticipated entry into the foldable smartphone market. This development comes as Apple prepares for a potential launch later this year, with expectations that the iPhone Fold will debut alongside the iPhone 18 Pro.

Apple has been experimenting internally with foldable iPhones for years, indicating a commitment to innovation in smartphone design. The iPhone Fold is expected to leverage advanced manufacturing techniques, including a 3D printed hinge, which aims to minimize the visibility of creases on the folding display. According to Fixed Focus Digital, “Apple may use 3D printing technology to build the hinge mechanism of its foldable iPhone,” which could enhance the durability and aesthetics of the device.

In preparation for large-scale production, Apple is reportedly ordering up to 20 million foldable display panels from Samsung Display, a move that underscores the company’s confidence in the iPhone Fold’s market potential. The device may also incorporate a dual-layer glass setup utilizing Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG) and Ultra-Fine Glass (UFG), further enhancing its design and functionality.

Despite the excitement surrounding the iPhone Fold, there are challenges ahead. Mark Gurman noted, “There is no doubt that [iPhone Fold] is going to come a little bit later than the Pro phones,” suggesting that production hurdles could delay its release. Historical context reveals that Apple faced similar challenges with the iPhone X, raising questions about the timeline for the iPhone Fold’s arrival.

As the launch date approaches, analysts are optimistic. Barclays analyst Tim Long has indicated that the iPhone Fold is expected to arrive in users’ hands by December 2026. However, details remain unconfirmed, and the exact launch date is still uncertain.

In the competitive landscape of foldable smartphones, Apple is not alone. Other manufacturers, such as Oppo, have made strides in this area, with Oppo achieving a ‘zero-feel crease’ by employing advanced laser measurement techniques. This innovation highlights the ongoing race among tech companies to perfect foldable technology.

As Apple moves forward with the iPhone Fold, the integration of 3D printing technology represents a significant shift in manufacturing processes, which has already been utilized in products like the Apple Watch casings and USB Type-C ports. The efficiency of 3D printing, which uses less material than traditional forging methods, could play a crucial role in the production of the iPhone Fold.

With the iPhone Fold’s trial production underway and expectations for a launch later this year, the tech community is keenly watching for further developments. The anticipation surrounding this innovative device reflects Apple’s ongoing commitment to pushing the boundaries of smartphone technology.
