Joseph Tegbe has been nominated as Minister of Power by President Bola Tinubu on April 30, 2026. This nomination follows the resignation of Adebayo Adelabu, who left to pursue governorship ambitions. The move highlights a shift in leadership aimed at revitalizing Nigeria’s power sector.

Bayo Onanuga, a spokesperson for the presidency, stated, “The nomination has been transmitted to the Senate for screening and confirmation in accordance with the Constitution.” He added that Tegbe’s appointment is expected to strengthen ongoing efforts to reform the power sector, enhance grid stability, and attract sustainable investment.

Tegbe, who hails from Oyo State, brings over 35 years of experience from both public and private sectors. He previously served as Senior Partner and Head of Advisory Services at KPMG Africa. Currently, he is the Director General and Global Liaison for the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership, where he coordinates development efforts between Nigeria and China.

His background includes advising key government institutions on strategic reforms and regulatory frameworks within the power sector. The President expects him to leverage this expertise to advance critical reforms upon his confirmation.

Adebayo Adelabu’s resignation occurred in March 2026. His departure created an opening for new leadership focused on fiscal policy reform and institutional transformation within Nigeria’s energy landscape.

The nomination has been sent to the Senate for confirmation. No timeline has been shared regarding when this process will conclude. However, Tegbe’s anticipated role could significantly impact Nigeria’s approach to power sector reform.
