The NELFUND initiative has significantly impacted students’ academic success. It has eased financial burdens that often hinder educational achievement. Nearly 1.38 million beneficiaries have accessed this support, with nearly 60 percent coming from the northern part of Nigeria.

Before NELFUND, many students struggled with high tuition fees and student loans. Families faced tough choices, often leading to limited access to higher education. The introduction of this initiative marked a decisive moment. The Federal Government has spent 242.4 billion naira on loan disbursements since its inception.

Beneficiaries like Augustine Ayorinde and Oladepo Caleb Olugbenga have shared their success stories. Ayorinde graduated with a First Class from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) and credited NELFUND for his academic performance. He stated, “When you remove the barrier of tuition, you allow brilliance to thrive.” This sentiment resonates across many campuses.

Oladepo Caleb Olugbenga emerged as the overall best graduating engineering student at LAUTECH with a CGPA of 4.89. He also attributes his achievements to the support provided by NELFUND. Such testimonials highlight the direct effects on students’ academic outcomes.

Repayment for NELFUND loans begins two years after beneficiaries complete their National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and secure employment. No interest is charged on these loans, making them more accessible than traditional student loans.

Yet, challenges remain. Approximately 25% of NELFUND applicants have borrowed from loan apps at least once in the last two years, indicating ongoing financial strain among some students. Dr. Ahmed Popoola noted that digital platforms have become a common resource for these applicants.

The NELFUND initiative serves as one of the most impactful social interventions in recent years within the Nigerian education system. It not only supports academic performance but also fosters hope for countless families navigating financial hardships.

Nelfund has significantly changed the landscape of education financing in Nigeria, providing over N200 billion to students.

Historically, Nigerian students relied heavily on family support for education funding, often facing significant barriers due to financial constraints. This situation has changed dramatically with the introduction of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), which has emerged as a pivotal resource for students across the nation.

As of April 2026, NELFUND has disbursed over N200 billion to more than 1.1 million students nationwide. This initiative has not only eased financial burdens but has also stimulated the economy by enabling students to pursue their education without the constant worry of tuition fees.

The decisive moment for NELFUND came between March 2025 and March 2026, during which it disbursed an impressive N206.2 billion. This surge in funding coincided with a significant increase in applications, with NELFUND receiving 1.7 million applications by March 2026, indicating a growing recognition of the program’s benefits.

Approximately 65% of the funds have been allocated directly to institutions for tuition, while the remaining 35% has been provided as upkeep allowances to students. This financial structure has been instrumental in ensuring that students can focus on their studies rather than their financial situations.

The recent commissioning of the GYB Model Secondary School in Nagazi, Kogi State, exemplifies the tangible outcomes of NELFUND’s efforts. The school, featuring 18 classrooms, a library, science laboratories, an ICT centre, and a Computer-Based Test facility, currently serves over 1,700 students, showcasing the initiative’s commitment to enhancing educational infrastructure.

Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa emphasized the program’s mission, stating, “No Nigerian is denied access to education due to financial constraints.” This statement reflects NELFUND’s core objective of making education accessible to all, regardless of their economic background.

Experts have noted that the core idea behind student loans, as articulated by Tunde Alao-Olaifa, is to enable young people to borrow from their future earnings to fund their current education. This model not only empowers students but also fosters a culture of financial responsibility.

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo highlighted the significance of the new school, stating, “What we are commissioning today represents a key component of a comprehensive and deliberate statewide transformation strategy.” This underscores the broader impact of NELFUND beyond just financial aid.

Despite the successes, some experts caution that NELFUND is not a commercial loan book but rather an accepted structural subsidy, indicating the need for ongoing evaluation of its long-term sustainability and impact.

As NELFUND continues to evolve, its role in transforming education financing in Nigeria remains crucial, promising a future where financial barriers no longer hinder access to education.

NELFUND Extends Student Loan Application Deadline

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has approved an extension of its Student Loan Application Portal for the 2025/2026 academic session, significantly impacting eligible students across participating institutions.

This extension is particularly important for institutions that submitted official requests to NELFUND, allowing their students additional time to complete loan applications. Akintunde Sawyerr, the Managing Director and CEO of NELFUND, emphasized the organization’s commitment to ensuring that eligible students have access to the student loan programme.

According to the announcement made in Abuja, the extension applies strictly to schools that formally requested more time for their students to apply. Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, a representative from NELFUND, reiterated that this measure is aimed at enabling eligible students to complete their applications on the NELFUND student loan portal.

NELFUND aims to ensure wider access to the student loan scheme, which is designed to provide financial support to students in Nigeria. The fund is committed to transparency, accountability, and sustainable student financing solutions, which are crucial for the educational advancement of many young Nigerians.

Eligible students from the affected institutions are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity and complete their applications via the official NELFUND portal. The extension reflects NELFUND’s ongoing efforts to support students in their pursuit of higher education.

As the deadline approaches, students are urged to act promptly to ensure their applications are submitted on time. This extension may provide a vital lifeline for many who rely on financial assistance to further their education.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the specific duration of the extension and the total number of institutions that have benefited from this decision. Further developments are expected as NELFUND continues to communicate with the institutions involved.

NELFUND has announced an extension of its student loan application deadline to March 2, 2026, in response to increased demand and awareness efforts.

NELFUND Extends Student Loan Application Deadline

The recent extension of the NELFUND student loan application deadline raises an important question: why has this decision been made? The answer lies in the increased demand for student loans and the need to provide equitable access to education for all eligible students.

NELFUND, the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, has officially extended its application deadline to March 2, 2026, from the original date of February 27, 2026. This extension aims to accommodate students who require additional time to complete their applications, as stated by Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, a representative of NELFUND.

The decision to extend the deadline also reflects the growing awareness of the loan scheme, particularly among prospective applicants who became informed during recent sensitization campaigns. Akintunde Sawyerr noted that these efforts have significantly increased participation across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

Institutions commencing the 2025/2026 academic session can also benefit from this extension. However, they must submit official requests for the extension along with their approved academic calendars to ensure compliance with NELFUND’s guidelines.

This move underscores NELFUND’s commitment to inclusivity and equitable access to education, ensuring that all eligible students have a fair opportunity to apply for financial assistance. As awareness of the program continues to grow, the organization is optimistic about reaching more students in need.

In summary, the extension of the NELFUND student loan application deadline is a strategic response to increased demand and a commitment to supporting students in Nigeria. As the application period progresses, it remains to be seen how many additional students will take advantage of this opportunity.
