Nigeria mourns the sudden death of its ambassador-designate to Algeria, Mohammed Mahmud Lele, who passed away in the early hours of April 19, 2026, in Ankara, Türkiye. He died after a protracted illness. His death is viewed as a monumental loss to Nigeria’s diplomatic service.

Lele was born in 1976 in Gamawa, Bauchi State. He joined the Nigerian Foreign Service in 2001 and served in various missions, including Berlin, Lomé, and Riyadh. At the time of his death, he was the director in charge of the Middle East and Gulf Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recently appointed Lele as ambassador-designate to Algeria following Senate confirmation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed condolences to his family and associates. Dunoma Ahmed described him as a hardworking and humble officer.

Lele was buried on April 22, 2026, in Kano according to Islamic rites. The Ministry extended heartfelt condolences to his immediate family and friends as well as the government and people of Bauchi State.

His contributions to Nigeria’s foreign policy were recognized widely. “Ambassador Lele was known for his intellectual depth and strategic insight,” said an official statement from the Ministry. He will be sorely missed by colleagues in the diplomatic community.
