The latest move by Nigeria’s Ministry of Interior comes as part of ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening border security and preventing identity fraud. The directive mandates the Nigeria Immigration Service to withdraw and deactivate the passports of individuals who have formally renounced their Nigerian citizenship.

This directive applies specifically to those whose renunciation requests have been approved by President Bola Tinubu. According to Section 29 of the 1999 Constitution, individuals who renounce their citizenship cease to be Nigerians upon the registration of their declaration.

Once a person is no longer a citizen of Nigeria, they are ineligible to hold any sovereign documents, including passports. This action is part of a broader initiative to enhance the credibility of Nigeria’s travel documents and ensure the integrity of citizenship.

Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, emphasized the importance of this directive, stating, “We will continue to strengthen systems that secure Nigeria’s borders, prevent identity fraud, preserve the sanctity of Nigerian citizenship, and facilitate legitimate travel while preventing unauthorized or ineligible access.”

The Ministry of Interior is tasked with overseeing citizenship integrity in Nigeria, and this directive aligns with agreements signed between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the United Kingdom regarding migration partnership and border security.

As the implementation of this directive unfolds, observers expect it to significantly impact how citizenship and travel documents are managed in Nigeria. The move is seen as a necessary step in enhancing national security and maintaining the integrity of Nigerian citizenship.

In summary, the cancellation of passports for those who have renounced their citizenship marks a significant policy shift aimed at reinforcing border security and preventing identity fraud in Nigeria.
