The University of Ibadan recently took significant steps to enhance accessibility for persons with disabilities while grappling with a staffing crisis in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector. On April 29, 2026, the university received ramps and accessible toilet facilities aimed at improving healthcare access for disabled individuals.

Key initiatives:

The university received ramps designed to improve accessibility for wheelchair users.

Accessible toilet facilities were also installed to support inclusive healthcare delivery.

389 newly employed lecturers underwent training by the University of Ibadan Chapter of ASUU on union ideals and principles.

Dr. Adefemi Afolabi noted that while the recruitment of new lecturers is commendable, it is insufficient compared to the staffing needs of public universities. The training program emphasized ethics, responsibilities, and expectations for academic staff members.

The ASUU warned against professional misconduct during the training, addressing issues like examination malpractice and sexual harassment. This reflects ongoing concerns within Nigeria’s academic environment.

Mr. Abdullahi Alli Usman, National President of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, advocated for stronger inclusion of disabled individuals in all aspects of life in Nigeria. Dr. Aderonke Ajav highlighted that these new facilities will significantly improve mobility and access within the health center, particularly for persons with disabilities.

The university’s commitment to enhancing accessibility aligns with the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities Prohibition Act established in 2018. However, uncertainties remain about how effectively these initiatives will address broader staffing challenges in Nigeria’s educational landscape.
