Bashir El-Rufai has confirmed the release of his father, Nasir El-Rufai, from the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) custody, following the death of Hajiya Umma El-Rufai in Cairo, Egypt. This development comes after Nasir El-Rufai had been detained since February 19, 2026, facing serious charges including money laundering, fraud, and abuse of office.

In a social media post that was later deleted, Bashir El-Rufai referred to the ICPC as “one of the most corrupt agencies in Nigeria” and expressed relief over his father’s temporary release. The post garnered over 33,000 views before its removal, highlighting the public interest in the El-Rufai family’s situation.

Nasir El-Rufai’s release was granted on compassionate grounds due to the recent passing of his mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai. Her death was announced by her grandson, Bello El-Rufai, who shared the news on Facebook, stating, “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. From Allah SWT we came and to Him we shall all return.” This sentiment was echoed by prominent figures such as President Bola Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who both extended their condolences to the grieving family.

Nasir El-Rufai’s legal troubles have been significant, with allegations suggesting that he fraudulently induced approximately 11 billion naira from the Kaduna State government. Additionally, he is accused of dishonestly disposing of over 1 million naira from a World Bank loan and receiving severance payments totaling 289.8 million naira.

The Federal High Court in Kaduna has scheduled a hearing for Nasir El-Rufai’s bail application on March 31, 2026, as the legal proceedings continue. The ICPC has yet to confirm whether he will face re-arrest following his temporary release.

Bashir El-Rufai expressed that the family has always managed to overcome challenges, stating, “the El-Rufais always do.” However, the uncertainty surrounding his father’s legal status remains a concern for the family and their supporters.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the next steps in this ongoing legal saga, particularly whether Nasir El-Rufai will be re-arrested after his release.

Hajiya Umma El-Rufai died in Cairo, Egypt after a long illness. She was the mother of Nasir El-Rufai, who is currently under detention for alleged financial misconduct. Mohammed Bello El-Rufai expressed his condolences, stating, “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. From Allah SWT we came and to Him we shall all return,” and added, “We are grateful for the life she lived and may Allah SWT bless her gentle soul.”

As Egypt mourns this loss, the country has also imposed a business curfew starting from March 27, 2026. This curfew mandates that shops, restaurants, and shopping malls close by 9:00 pm on weekdays. The decision comes in response to a significant increase in the nation’s monthly energy bill, which surged from $560 million to $1.650 billion due to the ongoing war in Iran.

The curfew is initially set to last for one month, with officials indicating that it is a necessary measure to manage the economic impact of rising energy costs. Mostafa Madbouly, the Prime Minister, remarked, “Cairo must work on the ‘worst-case scenario’ in the face of a war whose outcome is unpredictable.”

Despite the new restrictions, Tourism Minister Sherif Fathy assured that the measures will not affect tourists visiting the country. The government is keen to balance public safety and economic activity amid these challenging times.

Additionally, fuel prices in Egypt saw a 30% increase at the beginning of March 2026, further complicating the economic landscape. As the situation develops, observers will be watching closely to see how these changes impact daily life and the broader economy in Egypt.
