Hadiza Jega, the wife of former Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman Attahiru Jega, has passed away. Her death was confirmed by Bayero University, Kano, where Attahiru Jega is currently a professor of political science.

The Janazah prayer for Hadiza Jega is scheduled to take place immediately after Zuhr at the National Mosque in Abuja on April 5, 2026, at 1:30 p.m.

Attahiru Jega, who served as INEC chairman from 2010 to 2015, was previously the Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano. He and Hadiza were married for 40 years, a union that has been described as one marked by deep affection and mutual respect.

In a statement, Bayero University Kano expressed their condolences, stating, “Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. With total submission to the will of Allah, we announce the passing of Hajiya Hadiza Attahiru Jega.” They further prayed, “May Allah grant her Aljannatul Firdaus and forgive her shortcomings. May He also grant the family the strength and patience to bear this loss. Ameen.”

President Bola Tinubu also expressed his condolences, highlighting Hadiza Jega’s exceptional character. He remarked, “Dear Professor Jega, it is with a heavy heart that I receive the news of the passing of your beloved wife of over 40 years. Hajiya was an exceptional woman.”

Vice-President Kashim Shettima attended the Janazah prayer, reflecting the significant impact Hadiza Jega had on those around her. Observers note that her legacy will continue through the lives she touched during her lifetime.

As the community mourns her passing, many are expected to gather at the National Mosque to pay their respects and support the Jega family during this difficult time.
