Previously, civil servants faced rising costs without adequate support. The government had approved salary increases of 25% to 35% two years ago. However, many workers still struggled with basic expenses.

Now, the Federal Government has approved an increase in peculiar allowances and welfare benefits for civil servants. This change impacts workers under both the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS) and the Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure (CONRAISS).

The allowance adjustments reflect across all grade levels. Senior and junior officers will see better earnings as a result. Didi Walson-Jack emphasized, “Even if you are based in Abuja and attend training within Abuja, you are entitled to full DTA.”

Civil servants attending approved training programmes will receive the full DTA, regardless of travel. This marks a clear enhancement of support for professional development.

Additionally, an exit benefit scheme will provide retiring civil servants with 100% of their full emoluments as an exit package starting January 1, 2026. Walson-Jack stated, “No public servant should leave service without adequate financial support.”

The Employee Compensation Scheme is now operational to protect workers suffering job-related injuries or death—another step towards improving civil service welfare.

In Oyo State, Governor Seyi Makinde announced a ₦10,000 monthly transportation support fund for civil servants. This fund will run for three months starting in March 2026. Makinde noted, “This support is a direct response to the realities our workers are facing.”

Furthermore, the Federal Government allocated ₦10 billion for a housing loan scheme aimed at improving access to home ownership for civil servants.

These reforms respond to rising living costs and labor union demands for better welfare. The changes signal a commitment to investing in Nigeria’s workforce.
