The protest was sparked by months of epileptic power supply that affected daily life and businesses. Residents reported receiving only 16 hours of daily power supply. They expressed frustration over these prolonged issues and demanded consistent electricity.

Ikeja Electric attributed the interruptions to a reduction in electricity allocation from the national grid. The company has implemented controlled rationing of supply to manage the shortfall and preserve system stability.

The Lagos State Government has signed power purchase agreements with three independent power producers to improve electricity supply. This step aims to address ongoing challenges in power distribution.

Ikeja Electric also marked World Malaria Day in 2026 with community health outreach initiatives. These initiatives took place in Abule-Egba and Odogunyan communities and included malaria testing as well as distribution of treated mosquito nets and antimalarial medication.

Protesters voiced their concerns during the demonstration. One said, “Power is a right, not a privilege.” Another added, “We want consistent and stable electricity in reasonable supply, not minutes.”

Ikeja Electric acknowledged the ongoing challenges. A representative stated, “We sincerely regret the ongoing power supply challenges currently affecting some areas within our network due to reduced power allocation from the grid.” Kingsley Okotie from Ikeja Electric emphasized that their responsibility extends beyond just providing electricity.
