The country has a challenge in retaining its healthcare workforce, necessitating the need for more healthcare workers. In response, the Federal Government plans to construct a 168-room hostel for medical students at the University of Lagos (UNILAG). This facility will be the first of its kind at the university and is expected to be completed within 24 months.

Each room in the hostel will accommodate two students, providing essential housing for those pursuing medical education. Dr. Anthony Ajulo, a representative of the project, stated, “This is a modern, ultra-modern student hostel. It is self-contained.” The initiative aims to help produce 1,000 doctors per year at UNILAG, addressing the ongoing issue of brain drain in the medical field.

The project is fully funded by the Federal Government under the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND). Dr. Collins Balogun emphasized the importance of this initiative, noting, “The goal of the President is to increase the number of medical doctors we have in the country because, you know, over the years, we have been experiencing brain drain.” This development is seen as a significant step towards bolstering the nation’s healthcare capacity.

In a related context, the Lagos State Government recently evacuated over 230 students from the University of Jos due to security concerns. This evacuation was organized by the Lagos State Ministry of Tertiary Education, highlighting the government’s commitment to the safety of its citizens studying outside the state. Mamud Hassan, a government official, remarked, “The safety and well-being of our citizens, particularly our youth pursuing education across the country, remain a top priority for this administration.”

As the construction of the hostel progresses, observers anticipate that it will play a crucial role in enhancing the educational infrastructure for medical students at UNILAG, ultimately contributing to the improvement of healthcare services in Nigeria.
