Bashir El-Rufai has confirmed the release of his father, Nasir El-Rufai, from the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) custody, following the death of Hajiya Umma El-Rufai in Cairo, Egypt. This development comes after Nasir El-Rufai had been detained since February 19, 2026, facing serious charges including money laundering, fraud, and abuse of office.

In a social media post that was later deleted, Bashir El-Rufai referred to the ICPC as “one of the most corrupt agencies in Nigeria” and expressed relief over his father’s temporary release. The post garnered over 33,000 views before its removal, highlighting the public interest in the El-Rufai family’s situation.

Nasir El-Rufai’s release was granted on compassionate grounds due to the recent passing of his mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai. Her death was announced by her grandson, Bello El-Rufai, who shared the news on Facebook, stating, “Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. From Allah SWT we came and to Him we shall all return.” This sentiment was echoed by prominent figures such as President Bola Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who both extended their condolences to the grieving family.
