Recent changes in Nigeria's scholarship landscape reveal significant barriers for graduates while showing a notable increase in applications for international scholarships.

Before the recent developments, thousands of Nigerian graduates faced systemic barriers that hindered their access to international scholarship opportunities. A survey conducted by Dr. Olumuyiwa Igbalajobi revealed that nearly two-thirds of respondents lacked the confidence and knowledge required to navigate the application process. Financial constraints were also significant barriers, with many citing application fees and costs associated with obtaining international passports as obstacles.

However, a decisive moment occurred when the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) commenced interviews for its Overseas Scholarship Scheme, screening 681 candidates from the North-West zone in Kaduna. This initiative is part of a broader effort, as the PTDF received an impressive 38,398 applications nationwide for both MSc and PhD programmes, marking a substantial increase in interest.

The number of shortlisted candidates for the PTDF scholarship increased by 17.7% from the previous year, with 5,885 candidates selected for interviews across six centres nationwide. This increase reflects a growing willingness among Nigerian graduates to pursue international scholarships, with 75% of survey respondents expressing a strong desire to apply within the next 12 months.

Despite the positive shift in application numbers, the challenges remain significant. More than 80% of those who attempted applications reported difficulties in preparing critical documents, underscoring the need for better support systems. Dr. Igbalajobi noted that financial constraints continue to play a prominent role in limiting access to these opportunities.

Expert voices, such as Bashir Ahmed Rufai, emphasized the robustness of the selection process, stating, “The process so far is very satisfactory. There are individuals from the Federal Character Commission who have attested to that.” This adherence to federal character principles ensures equitable state representation in the final selection.

Furthermore, partnerships with countries like the UK, Germany, France, and Malaysia have been established to enhance the scholarship offerings. Bello Mustapha highlighted that the final selection is based on federal character, ensuring that each state is allocated a certain number of slots.

While the increase in applications is promising, the survey indicates that many graduates still feel unprepared. The percentage of applicants shortlisted in 2026 was 15.5%, compared to 17.2% in 2025, suggesting that while more individuals are applying, the competition remains fierce.

As the PTDF continues its nationwide interviews, the landscape of scholarship opportunities in Nigeria is evolving. The final selection will reflect not only the merit of the candidates but also the equitable representation of states, addressing some of the systemic barriers that have long affected Nigerian graduates.
