Bala Muhammed was born on October 5, 1958. He began his political career as a senator for Bauchi South from 2007 to 2010. He later served as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory from 2010 to 2015. In the 2019 governorship election, he won with a margin of over 14,000 votes, receiving 515,313 votes compared to his opponent’s 500,625 votes.

The decision to defect followed consultations with his supporters and stakeholders. He stated, “The welfare of my supporters and the future of Bauchi politics were central to the decision.” He expressed gratitude towards the PDP for providing him a platform to become governor.

Bala Muhammed’s political influence has been shaped by his experiences within the PDP and his previous roles. His time as chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum also contributed to his stature in Nigerian politics. However, he faced challenges, including an arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in October 2016, where he spent 49 days in jail.

An Abuja High Court later deemed this imprisonment illegal and unconstitutional, ordering the EFCC to pay him N5 million in compensation. Such incidents have not deterred him from pursuing his political ambitions.
