Queen Ants Smuggling Attempt Foiled in Nairobi
A Chinese national was arrested in Kenya for attempting to smuggle over 2,000 live queen ants, an incident that underscores the ongoing challenges of wildlife trafficking. The suspect, identified as Zhang Kequn, was intercepted at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport during a security check before a flight to China.
During the inspection, authorities discovered that 1,948 queen ants were stored inside test tubes, while approximately 300 others were concealed in three rolls of tissue paper. The species involved in this smuggling attempt is known as Messor cephalotes, commonly referred to as the giant African harvester ant. This species is particularly valuable as queen ants can establish entire colonies, making them highly sought after by collectors.
The trade of Messor cephalotes is protected under international biodiversity agreements and is tightly regulated. Investigators believe that Zhang Kequn may be linked to a wider ant-trafficking network, indicating that this incident could be part of a larger problem involving the illegal trade of insects.
Allen Mulama, a spokesperson for the authorities, noted, “The way the insects were packaged suggests careful preparation aimed at keeping them alive during the long journey abroad.” This observation points to a level of planning and knowledge about how to transport live insects, which raises concerns about the sophistication of such trafficking operations.
The popularity of ant keeping has grown rapidly in recent years, particularly in parts of Europe and Asia, leading to increased demand for various species, including queen ants. The minimum price of a single queen ant can reach €100, while some may sell for as much as €200, further incentivizing illegal activities.
Under Kenya’s Wildlife Conservation and Management Act, wildlife trafficking is considered a serious offense. Authorities have allowed Zhang Kequn to be detained for a minimum of five days as investigations continue. Details remain unconfirmed regarding his connections to other individuals involved in the trafficking network.
