In a significant development for Napoli FC, head coach Antonio Conte’s future is under scrutiny as the club struggles in Serie A, currently sitting seven points behind leaders Inter Milan with just seven matches remaining this season.
Conte’s contract with Napoli runs until 2027, yet the recent resignation of Gennaro Gattuso as Italy’s coach has opened discussions about potential changes within the coaching ranks. Gattuso stepped down after Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup for the third consecutive time.
Conte previously managed the Italian national team from 2014 to 2016, leading them to the Euro 2016 quarter-finals, where they were eliminated by Germany on penalties. His name has surfaced as a candidate for the national team position, with Aurelio De Laurentiis, Napoli’s president, indicating he would not obstruct Conte’s ambitions should he wish to pursue the role.
De Laurentiis stated, “If Conte asked me to allow him to become the national team coach again, I would say yes.” However, he also noted the current disarray within the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), suggesting that Conte may hesitate to take on such a role without a stable leadership structure in place.
Meanwhile, the FIGC is set to hold an extraordinary meeting on June 22 to elect a new president, after which Gattuso’s replacement will be named. Massimiliano Allegri has also been linked to the Italy coaching position, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the national team.
On the club front, tensions have arisen with Romelu Lukaku, who withdrew from the Belgium squad during the March international break and did not return to Italy as expected. Reports indicate that Lukaku underwent rehabilitation at a specialized clinic, which has caused friction between him and Napoli.
Ranocchia expressed bewilderment at the breakdown in communication between Lukaku and the club, highlighting the challenges Napoli faces as they aim to close the gap in the league standings.
