Leke Abejide has announced his resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) amid ongoing internal turmoil. He cited the need to protect his political future as a primary reason for his departure.
Abejide represents Yagba Federal Constituency in Kogi State. He has served two terms in the House of Representatives, winning his seat in both the 2019 and 2023 elections on the ADC platform. In a statement, he expressed regret over leaving the party he helped build.
“It is a painful decision but necessary to save my political future from those who came to destroy my former political party that I laboured hard to nurture and loved dearly,” Abejide said. He alleged that the ADC has been hijacked by individuals with ill intentions, particularly following a Supreme Court ruling that reinstated the leadership of David Mark.
Abejide plans to join a “mainstream political party” ahead of the upcoming 2027 elections. He indicated that he might align with the All Progressives Congress (APC). His lawyers advised him to leave the ADC to safeguard his future in Kogi State politics.
The situation within the ADC reflects broader issues in Nigerian politics, particularly concerning party leadership crises and realignment. Many politicians have shifted allegiances as they prepare for upcoming elections.
Abejide claimed he nurtured and funded the ADC from its inception until it gained recognition. He stated that it was unlawfully taken over by politicians expelled from other parties. His resignation raises questions about future dynamics within Kogi State politics and beyond.
