Manchester United: Youri Tielemans on his dream move, injuries and playing with Marcus RashfordManchester United: Youri Tielemans on his dream move, injuries and playing with Marcus Rashford

Tielemans’ Journey to Old Trafford

Youri Tielemans has joined Manchester United in a move that marks the third time the club has shown interest in the Belgian midfielder. United first considered Tielemans in 2019, following his loan spell at Leicester City. Interest resurfaced in 2022, but a deal did not materialise as the club pursued other targets. This July, while Tielemans was on World Cup duty, Manchester United activated a £35m release clause, securing him from Aston Villa on a five-year contract.

Tielemans acknowledged the previous discussions, stating, “There had been two times that I spoke with the club, but it did not achieve anything.” He expressed that he was not anticipating a move this summer, remaining focused on his national team commitments. However, he was aware of the release clause in his contract, which made a transfer possible.

The midfielder shared his gratitude towards Aston Villa, crediting them for helping him regain his top form. He described Villa as a “great club” where they achieved “amazing things.” Despite his appreciation for Villa, Tielemans views Manchester United as a step up, noting that there are clubs above Villa, and United is one of them. He considers joining United a significant career achievement but emphasised his desire for continued success rather than complacency.

Settling In and On-Pitch Dynamics

Tielemans appears relaxed during his initial media interactions since his transfer. He expressed his aim to contribute goals to Manchester United, having previously scored the winning goal in the 2021 FA Cup final for Leicester and the opener for Villa in their Europa League triumph against Freiburg in May.

A developing partnership with captain Bruno Fernandes has been observed by senior Manchester United officials. This was evident during their 26 minutes on the pitch together in a 1-1 draw against Paris St-Germain in Gothenburg. Tielemans described their connection as “really natural,” noting Fernandes’ ability to find space, which he aims to exploit by finding him to facilitate forward play.

Tielemans has found familiar faces at Manchester United, aiding his transition. Jonny Evans, a former teammate at Leicester, has remained close with Tielemans and provided a positive character reference to head coach Michael Carrick. Tielemans also briefly played alongside Harry Maguire at Leicester. Tielemans praised Rashford’s performance at Villa, highlighting his humility, hard work, touch, and acceleration, expressing hope that Rashford can bring those qualities to United.

Injury Management and Tactical Role

Tielemans made his professional debut for Anderlecht at the age of 16. He had to withdraw from Belgium’s World Cup quarter-final match against Spain last month due to an issue experienced during the warm-up. He clarified that the incident was due to an “overload of too many games; too many minutes,” which his body could no longer cope with after playing extended periods in previous matches against Senegal and the US.

Despite this, Tielemans stated he feels “very good” and does not believe he is a player who consistently needs rest.

Tielemans’ arrival is seen as addressing a need for a creative midfielder who can break defensive lines, a role that has been a focus for Manchester United since Carrick’s departure in 2018. This could potentially allow Fernandes more advanced positioning and provide the team with greater control in games, moving away from a primary counter-attacking style. Carrick has communicated his expectations to Tielemans, encouraging him to be “free on the pitch” and to organise the team effectively within the established structure that prioritises ball possession and specific pressing strategies.

Tielemans described Carrick’s instructions as logical and aligned with his natural football instincts developed since his youth at Anderlecht, stating, “It is just smelling football, which is what I have been doing from when I was young at Anderlecht.”
