Three people have died after a hantavirus outbreak aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship. The outbreak has prompted a World Health Organisation investigation into five additional suspected infections.

The operator of the MV Hondius reported that a Dutch couple and a German national had died. A 69-year-old UK national is in intensive care in South Africa due to hantavirus. The ship was carrying about 150 tourists when the outbreak occurred.

The MV Hondius departed from Argentina three weeks ago for a voyage that included stops in Antarctica and the Falkland Islands. Hantaviruses are primarily found in rodents and can infect humans through contact with infected rodent faeces, urine, and saliva.

According to experts, hantavirus infections are typically linked to environmental exposure. Associate Professor Vinod Balasubramaniam noted that these infections are often associated with contact with rodent reservoirs. Human-to-human transmission of hantavirus is rare, but the disease can cause severe respiratory illness.

Dr Yomani Sarathkumara stated that hantavirus infections were “really rare in humans.” However, public health action is necessary to address this outbreak. Epidemiological investigations are underway to determine the source of the infection.

The causes of the deaths of the other passengers are being investigated. Officials have not confirmed the exact cause of their deaths yet.

A suspected hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius has resulted in three deaths and has led to the ship being blocked from docking in Cape Verde. The incident occurred on May 3, 2026, while the vessel was sailing in the Atlantic Ocean.

At least one case of hantavirus has been confirmed among the passengers. Around 150 passengers were onboard at the time of the outbreak. The first victim was a 70-year-old Dutch man who died on the ship. His 69-year-old wife collapsed at an airport in South Africa and later died in a hospital.

The outbreak has prompted investigations by the World Health Organization (WHO) and local health authorities. A British national is currently in intensive care in Johannesburg after falling ill near Ascension Island. Two crew members are also experiencing acute respiratory symptoms and require medical care.

Health officials have stated that hantavirus infections are primarily spread by contact with infected rodents. The cruise ship had left Argentina about three weeks prior to the outbreak. Officials have not confirmed if rodent transmission occurred on board.

Key facts:

A total of three people have died due to the outbreak.

There is at least one confirmed case of hantavirus among passengers.

The ship was blocked from docking because of health concerns.

Investigations are ongoing by WHO and local health authorities.

The risk to the wider public remains low, according to health officials. Detailed investigations are ongoing, including further laboratory testing and epidemiological investigations. Local health authorities have visited the vessel to assess the condition of those affected.

In recent months, the field of psychology has seen significant developments, particularly concerning the understanding of people-pleasing behaviors and innovative training methods for psychology students. Research indicates that higher people-pleasing tendencies are significantly associated with lower levels of mental well-being among university students.

Chronic people-pleasing can lead to burnout, resentment, and a loss of personal identity, as noted by Dr. Susan Albers. She emphasizes that over time, these behaviors can have detrimental effects on mental health.

Dr. Jennifer Kromberg explains that people-pleasing is often a learned behavior stemming from childhood experiences, which can become ingrained over time. This understanding is crucial for both individuals struggling with these tendencies and professionals aiming to address them in therapy.

In a related development, a study conducted by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) research group ‘RISKIT’ explored the benefits of observing experienced therapists. The study involved 108 first-year psychology students divided into two groups for training, with one group shadowing therapists during therapy sessions.

The results showed that students who shadowed therapists demonstrated significant improvement in their ability to interact with patients. This kind of apprenticeship learning appears to be a valuable addition to the training methods typically used in the first academic year of study, according to Steffen André Fagerbakk.

Students observed therapy sessions for ten weeks, which provided them with practical insights that traditional classroom learning may not offer. The findings were published in the journal Psychotherapy Research, highlighting the importance of experiential learning in psychology education.

It takes at least six years of study to qualify as a clinical psychologist, underscoring the commitment required to enter this field. As the landscape of psychology continues to evolve, these insights into both personal behavior and educational practices are vital for future practitioners.

As the field progresses, understanding the implications of people-pleasing behaviors and enhancing training methods for psychology students will remain critical for improving mental health outcomes and professional competencies.

Before April 18, 2026, the expectation surrounding the 200m sprint was largely defined by Usain Bolt’s remarkable achievements. Bolt’s time of 19.93 seconds, set in 2004 at the age of 17, was considered a benchmark for young athletes, particularly in the under-20 category.

However, Gout Gout’s decisive moment came when he clocked an astonishing 19.67 seconds at the national championships in Sydney. This performance not only secured him the national title but also established a new world under-20 record, eclipsing Bolt’s long-standing mark.

The immediate effects of Gout’s victory were profound. His time of 19.67 seconds is now recognized as the fastest globally this year, surpassing his previous best of 19.84 seconds, which was wind-assisted. Additionally, Gout Gout’s achievement has placed him ahead of American sprinter Erriyon Knighton, whose fastest-ever under-20 time of 19.49 seconds remains unratified as an official record.

In the same race, Aidan Murphy finished second with a commendable time of 19.88 seconds, further highlighting the competitive nature of Australian athletics. Gout Gout expressed his relief and excitement, stating, “This is what I’ve been waiting for,” and emphasized the importance of racing against top athletes to push each other to their limits.

Gout Gout’s new record also carries historical significance, as he previously held the fastest-ever time by a 16-year-old at 20.06 seconds. His recent performance has not only rewritten the record books but also shifted the narrative around youth sprinting in Australia.

Experts in athletics have noted that Gout Gout’s achievement is a testament to the rigorous training and competitive spirit present in Australian sports. His ability to run such a time legally has lifted a weight off his shoulders, as he remarked, “There’s a big weight off my shoulders knowing I ran it legally, and I have the speed and my body to run times like that.”

Looking ahead, Gout Gout has decided to skip the Commonwealth Games to focus on the upcoming World Under-20 Championships in Oregon, scheduled for early August. This decision underscores his commitment to furthering his athletic career and potentially breaking more records.

As the athletics community reflects on this remarkable shift, Gout Gout’s performance serves as a reminder of the evolving landscape of sprinting, where young athletes are increasingly challenging established records and expectations.

What observers say

“Together for health. Stand with science,” stated Doctor Abdulazeez Adams Adeiza during the celebrations for World Health Day 2026 in Kogi State, Nigeria. This year’s theme emphasizes the critical role of scientific collaboration in safeguarding the health of people, animals, plants, and the planet.

World Health Day, observed annually on April 7, aims to raise awareness about pressing health issues. The 2026 campaign is particularly focused on the interconnections between science and health, inviting individuals and organizations to share personal stories and engage with evidence-based practices.

The campaign coincides with significant events, including the International One Health Summit and the inaugural Global Forum of WHO Collaborating Centres, both taking place on April 7. These gatherings highlight the global commitment to addressing health challenges through scientific collaboration.

In Kogi State, local authorities organized a road walk to mark the occasion, aimed at raising awareness about the importance of science in health. The event included screening for hypertension and tuberculosis, further emphasizing the need for preventative healthcare measures.

Doctor Abdulazeez Adams Adeiza remarked, “Science remains the backbone of progress in healthcare, from disease prevention to improved treatment and diagnostics.” His comments underscore the necessity of integrating scientific research into health policies and practices.

Furthermore, Kogi State is revitalizing over 150 Primary Healthcare Centres as part of its commitment to improving health services. Under the leadership of Governor Usman Ahmed Ododo, the state is prioritizing partnerships in health investments, recognizing that collaboration is essential for sustainable healthcare development.

As the campaign unfolds, health organizations such as the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the Nigerian Red Cross Society are expected to play pivotal roles in promoting the message of collaboration and scientific integrity in health initiatives.

“We call on governments, scientists, health workers, partners, and the public to stand with science to protect lives, rebuild trust, and secure a healthier future,” an anonymous spokesperson emphasized, reflecting the collective call to action that resonates throughout the World Health Day 2026 celebrations.

Prior to the recent developments, global awareness of autism was steadily increasing, yet misconceptions and stigma surrounding the condition persisted. With 1 in 127 people diagnosed with autism worldwide, the need for comprehensive support and understanding has never been more critical.

On April 2, 2026, Nigeria marked World Autism Day with its largest-ever screening initiative, dubbed ‘Spark a Spectrum of Possibilities 2026.’ This decisive moment aimed to combat misinformation and promote inclusion, offering free screenings and consultations to the public.

The initiative features a notable 500 km cycling journey led by Kanyeyachukwu Tagbo‑Okeke, aimed at raising awareness and funds for autism support. This event highlights the commitment of various stakeholders, including the World Health Organization and the RBM Autism Foundation, to enhance the lives of individuals with autism.

As part of the celebrations, the theme for 2026, ‘Autism and Humanity – Every Life Has Value,’ underscores the importance of recognizing the worth of every individual, regardless of their challenges. This theme resonates deeply in a society where understanding and acceptance are crucial.

Oluremi Tinubu emphasized the importance of promoting understanding and equal opportunities for all, stating, “At a time when misinformation and harmful narratives about autism sometimes reemerge, we must remain steadfast in promoting understanding, inclusion and equal opportunities for all.” This perspective is vital as communities work to dismantle barriers faced by those with autism.

Moreover, evidence-based psychosocial interventions have been shown to improve communication and social skills for autistic individuals, further highlighting the need for accessible resources and support systems.

World Autism Awareness Day, established by the United Nations, serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts required to raise awareness about autism and advocate for the rights of those affected. The initiative in Nigeria represents a significant step forward in this global movement.

As the day unfolds, the impact of this screening drive is expected to reach far beyond immediate numbers, fostering a culture of acceptance and support within Nigerian society.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the total number of screenings conducted during the event, but the initiative’s scale suggests a substantial outreach effort.

What the data shows

The emergence of the BA.3.2 variant of COVID-19 raises significant questions about its potential impact on public health. This variant, a descendant of the Omicron lineage, was first identified in South Africa in November 2024. It carries more than 50 mutations in its spike protein compared to the BA.3 variant, which may influence its behavior and interaction with existing immunity.

As of February 2026, BA.3.2 has been detected in at least 23 countries, indicating its spread beyond its country of origin. Notably, it has also been found in the wastewater systems of 29 states in the U.S., suggesting a wider circulation within the community. The World Health Organization (WHO) classified BA.3.2 as a Variant Under Monitoring on December 5, 2025, highlighting the need for ongoing surveillance.

One of the critical concerns surrounding BA.3.2 is its ability to partially evade existing COVID-19 immunity. Reports indicate that while vaccines are still expected to protect against severe illness caused by this variant, there are signs that BA.3.2 may infect individuals more widely due to immune evasion. This characteristic could lead to an increase in cases, especially among populations with waning immunity.

Despite these concerns, experts have noted that BA.3.2 does not appear to be outcompeting other variants currently circulating. The WHO has stated that BA.3.2 poses a low additional public health risk compared with other circulating Omicron descendant lineages. Furthermore, there is no clear evidence that BA.3.2 causes more severe disease than other variants, according to a pulmonary and critical care doctor who emphasized that there is no sign so far that BA.3.2 is any more dangerous than variants circulating in the winter of 2025-26.

The first case of BA.3.2 in the United States was detected in June 2025, and since then, health officials have been monitoring its spread closely. The CDC has remarked that BA.3.2 marks a “new lineage” of “highly divergent” SARS-CoV-2, indicating its distinct genetic makeup. Additionally, the CDC noted that this cicada strain could be associated with seasonal increases in COVID-19 activity, which may complicate public health responses.

During the 2024-25 respiratory virus season, there were approximately 390,000 hospitalizations and 45,000 deaths attributed to COVID-19 in the U.S. This data underscores the ongoing impact of the virus, even as new variants emerge. The potential for BA.3.2 to contribute to long COVID is also a concern, with estimates suggesting that 3 in 100 cases may lead to long-term health issues.

As health authorities continue to monitor the situation, details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact timeline of BA.3.2’s emergence, with estimates suggesting it may have emerged between December 2023 and July 2024. The evolving nature of COVID-19 variants necessitates vigilance and adaptability in public health strategies to mitigate their impact.

What does the recent euthanasia case of Noelia Castillo reveal about the state of assisted dying laws and mental health support in Spain? Castillo, who was 25 years old at the time of her death, underwent euthanasia after enduring severe physical and emotional pain, raising critical questions about the adequacy of psychological care in the country.

Castillo’s journey toward euthanasia began with her diagnosis of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder, compounded by three episodes of sexual abuse that significantly impacted her mental health. After a suicide attempt in October 2022 left her paraplegic, she expressed a desire to end her suffering, stating, “I want to leave in peace already and stop suffering, period.” Her request for euthanasia was approved on July 18, 2024, but a legal battle initiated by her father delayed the process for 20 months.

Assisted suicide has been legal in Spain since June 2021, yet Castillo’s case has ignited intense debate across the nation. The Spanish Bishops’ Conference publicly condemned euthanasia, labeling it a societal defeat rather than a medical act. Archbishop Luis Argüello emphasized the need for comprehensive support, stating, “When life hurts, the answer cannot be to cut the journey short but rather to walk it together.”

Despite the legal framework allowing for euthanasia, Castillo’s case underscores the complexities surrounding mental health and the support systems available to individuals in distress. The bishops have called for increased resources for psychological care and support networks, highlighting a potential gap in the system that may have contributed to Castillo’s decision.

On March 26, 2026, Castillo’s euthanasia was carried out at the Sant Pere de Ribes hospital, marking a significant moment in the ongoing discussion about assisted dying in Spain. The case has prompted many to reconsider the implications of euthanasia, especially in cases involving mental health struggles.

As society grapples with these issues, the future of euthanasia legislation and mental health support in Spain remains uncertain. Castillo’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the need for compassionate care and understanding for those facing similar challenges.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the broader impacts of this case on future euthanasia policies in Spain, but it is clear that the conversation surrounding assisted dying is far from over.

Calorie counting is often inaccurate, with studies indicating that the average person underestimates their daily calorie intake by around 30 percent, which translates to approximately 600–750 calories. This discrepancy raises questions about the reliability of calorie counting as a method for managing weight.

Historically, the calorie values used today originated from research conducted around 1900 by Wilbur Olin Atwater. However, Atwater’s calculations did not account for the thermic effect of food, leading to further inaccuracies in calorie estimation.

Recent findings reveal that different individuals can extract varying amounts of energy from the same foods due to differences in gut microbiomes. A 2023 study highlighted that participants on a high-fiber diet absorbed fewer calories from their food, suggesting that dietary composition significantly affects calorie absorption.

Moreover, ultra-processed foods (UPFs) constitute nearly 60 percent of all calories consumed in the UK and US. Participants on an ultra-processed diet consumed about 500 extra calories daily compared to those on a minimally processed diet, which are harder to digest and lead to higher energy expenditure during digestion.

Experts emphasize that not all calories are equal. Dr. Adam Collins noted, “Trying to reliably measure how many calories I’m eating – let alone how many calories I’m burning – is a near-impossible task.” This sentiment is echoed by Prof. Rosa Krajmalnik-Brown, who stated, “Not all calories are the same.”

Prof. Giles Yeo further argues against calorie counting, asserting, “My point isn’t that we need better calorie counting. It’s that I don’t think we should calorie-count at all.” This perspective suggests a shift in focus from strict calorie counting to a more holistic approach to nutrition.

Eating a balanced plate with protein, carbohydrates, and vegetables can help manage weight without the need for calorie counting. Incorporating adequate fiber and protein can also help individuals feel fuller for longer, potentially leading to reduced overall calorie intake.

While the debate on calorie counting continues, the complexities of dietary habits and individual metabolism remain a significant area of research. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the long-term implications of these findings on public health and dietary guidelines.
