“Chelsea Football Club has today parted company with Head Coach Liam Rosenior,” the club announced. This decision comes after only 106 days in charge.
Calum McFarlane will take charge of the team as Interim Head Coach until the end of the season with support from existing Club backroom staff. He previously held this role after Enzo Maresca’s exit in January.
In his first stint, McFarlane led Chelsea to a 1-1 draw against Manchester City and suffered a 2-1 defeat against Fulham. His performance in the Man City match was pivotal. “I think the Man City game probably changed the narrative from being a nobody to being somebody who knows what he is doing,” said Fotheringham.
McFarlane is known as a “tactical obsessive” and has a background in grassroots football. Before becoming interim head coach, he served as Chelsea’s U21 coach.
Chelsea aims to achieve European qualification and progress in the FA Cup under McFarlane’s leadership. The club’s next fixture is an FA Cup match against Leeds on April 26.
Despite this change, Chelsea has not yet spoken to any candidates for a long-term replacement for Rosenior. The club is considering a process of self-reflection regarding their head coach appointment.
Yet, there is optimism among players and staff. “They are believing in McFarlane,” noted Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. This support could be crucial as he navigates challenging fixtures ahead.
McFarlane’s last games resulted in mixed outcomes—a draw and a defeat—but he now has another opportunity to shape Chelsea’s season moving forward.
