Asha Bhosle, the legendary Indian playback singer, has died at the age of 92 in Mumbai. Known for her remarkable versatility, Bhosle recorded more than 12,000 songs across various Indian languages throughout her seven-decade career.
Bhosle’s passing follows a recent hospitalization due to extreme exhaustion and a chest infection. Her son, Anand Bhosle, confirmed the news, stating, “My mother passed away today. Her last rites will be held tomorrow at Shivaji Park in Mumbai.”
Born on September 8, 1933, Bhosle began her singing career as a child alongside her elder sister, Lata Mangeshkar, after the death of their father. Over the years, she became a prominent figure in the Indian music industry, earning two Grammy nominations and receiving the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2001.
Her contributions extended beyond traditional Indian music; she collaborated with global artists, including the British virtual band Gorillaz. Bhosle also ventured into the culinary world by launching a restaurant chain named ‘Asha’s’ in Dubai and the United Kingdom.

Shankar Mahadevan, another celebrated musician, stated, “Every Indian is heartbroken today. Her music will never perish as long as humanity exists.” Hema Malini, an actress and dancer, shared her emotional connection with Bhosle, saying, “It is especially hard for me as I have an emotional connect with Asha ji – she has made many of my songs so popular with her unique voice and style.”
