Italy plans to donate its retired aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi to Indonesia, potentially enhancing military ties in the Indo-Pacific. The Italian parliament recently backed this proposal, which may reshape regional security dynamics.
The Giuseppe Garibaldi was retired in October 2024 after over four decades of service. It costs the Italian navy around €5 million ($5.8 million) annually to maintain. Dismantling the vessel would cost nearly €19 million ($22.2 million).
This donation contrasts with recent developments involving the USS Gerald R. Ford, which has completed over 10 months at sea and recently left the Middle East after operations against Iran. Currently, there are about 20 US Navy ships remaining in that region.
The move could benefit both Italy and Indonesia by fostering closer military and industrial cooperation. Dr. Alessandro Marrone stated, “It is a reasonable operation. Military and industrial cooperation brings returns, including on the political front and in other economic dossiers.” This perspective highlights potential advantages beyond mere military assets.
The geopolitical landscape remains complex. The United States and Iran are currently in an open-ended ceasefire, but tensions persist. Experts suggest that strengthening ties with Indonesia could help Italy counterbalance China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific.
