Tragic Attack in Kwande LGA

At least 12 people were killed in a devastating attack by suspected armed herders in the Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State. The incident, which occurred in the Tyungu Jam and Mbaav communities, has left the local population in a state of panic and distress.

Governor Hyacinth Alia condemned the killings, describing them as “barbaric, senseless, and unacceptable.” He emphasized that every life matters, stating, “The loss of even one life is too many.” This attack has raised significant concerns regarding the ongoing security situation in the region.

In response to the violence, over 400 security personnel have been deployed to Jato Aka and other areas within Kwande to restore order. This deployment comes despite the presence of more than 300 army personnel already stationed in the area, highlighting the severity of the situation.

Among the deceased are individuals such as Shagba Tyokase, Shagba Terease, and Liambee Yohane, with several others injured and currently receiving medical treatment. The injured include Msughaondo Terfa and Aondongu Terfa, among others.

Locals reported that many innocent lives have been lost, and the community is in desperate need of urgent help and immediate security intervention. A search is ongoing in the bush to recover some missing persons.

Governor Alia assured the public that his administration would ensure those responsible for the attack are held accountable. He acknowledged the complexities of insecurity in the region but expressed determination, stating, “We will not rest until peace is achieved in Kwande and across Benue State.”

The people of Turan have voiced their urgent need for protection, emphasizing that they cannot continue to face this tragedy alone. The incident underscores the ongoing challenges faced by communities in Kwande LGA, which have suffered from incessant attacks in recent times.
