Eid-el-Fitr signifies the end of the holy month of Ramadan. The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Thursday, March 19, and Friday, March 20, 2026, as public holidays to celebrate this important occasion.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who emphasized the significance of Eid-el-Fitr, stating, “Eid-el-Fitr, meaning ‘festival of breaking the fast,’ is one of the most important feasts in Islam.” This declaration was formalized in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani.
During this festive period, the Minister urged Muslims to sustain the virtues of love, generosity, peace, tolerance, and sacrifice that are emphasized during Ramadan. He also called on all Nigerians to pray for the continued peace, unity, and prosperity of the nation.
Eid-el-Fitr is celebrated with joy and gratitude, beginning with a special congregational prayer at mosques and open prayer grounds. The Federal Government remains committed to fostering national unity and peaceful coexistence among all Nigerians during this significant time.
